Occupational Therapists, Child Psychologist, Speech Therapist and Academic Support

At our school, we are fortunate to have a team of dedicated professionals to support the diverse needs of our students. We house two Occupational Therapists who work from a well-equipped therapy room, providing essential support to children who require therapy services. Additionally, we have a qualified Speech Therapist and a skilled Remedial Teacher on staff, enhancing our commitment to comprehensive education. It’s important to note that the therapists’ fees are not included in the school tuition.

Occupational Therapy

Candice Vermaak

Graduated from the University of the Witwatersrand with a Bachelor of Science in Occupational Therapy in 2001. Candice has worked in the paediatric field of occupational therapy and at Northwest Christian School since 2002 and completed her Sensory Integration qualification in 2007. Professional interests include sensory integration challenges, learning difficulties and developmental delay. Candice is passionate about working with parents, teachers, and other professionals to best equip a child through the educational challenges they may face.

Lee Hattingh

Lee is a lively, young Occupational Therapist, she graduated from the University of Free State with a Bachelor of Occupational Therapy in 2017 and then was placed at Heidelberg Secondary Hospital for Community Service year in 2018, where she worked with a wide range of cases, including those in the physical, psychiatric, and paediatric fields of OT. Currently she is in training for specialisation in Sensory Integration. Lee is passionate about working in paediatrics and investing into children’s lives. Lee started working at Northwest Christian School in 2019 and has a professional interest in children with sensory processing challenges, developmental delay, and other educational challenges.

Speech Therapy

Celéste Kruger

Celéste graduated from the University of the Pretoria with a degree in BCommunication Pathology (Speech and Language Therapy) in 2015 and completed her community service year in 2016.

Celéste is a caring and a sincere person. She passionate about having a good influence on people and a positive impact on their lives. Celéste enjoys working in a group and collaborating with other professionals to find the best possible treatment for the children she works with.

Her professional interests include helping children with communication difficulties.

Remedial Therapy

Shirley Bester

Shirley is an experienced, compassionate Remedial Therapist with 25 years teaching of experience. Shirley graduated from the University of the Witwatersrand with a Bachelor of Primary Education whilst teaching full time. Shirley became a partner in a Johannesburg franchise of Karmichael Study Skill Methodology for pupils. These courses targeted vital memorization techniques and study methodology skills. Hereafter, she obtained her Honors in Special Needs Education from Unisa, Cum Laude, while having her own family and running her CC named Mind the Gap. Shirley successfully completed a Counselling Diploma for Children and Adolescents from Unisa to target emotional needs of pupils too and hereafter completed the Read for Africa Course in phonographix. Her passion is to formulate individual Remedial Therapy programs for children from Grd R to Gr 7. Shirley has worked at Crawford Maragon for 10 years and is now services NWCS also. Remedial programs aim at re-building a pupil’s confidence and unique traits, plus address backlogs in literacy and numerical skills.
